šŸ‘‹ the ogc digest: september 05 2024

šŸ‘‹ Welcome back to the biweekly ogc roundup and happy friday!

Instead of a philosophical discussion this week, I thought we could crowdsource some opinions on advice and guiding principles we frequently hear - particularly from those of you in the later stages of your careers.

What advice were you given, or what did you previously believe, that turned out to be wrong or misguided as you grew older and more experienced?

Letā€™s discuss here.

ā£ļø The list

The community-recommended good stuff. Never sponsored.

Member recs: this canned non-alcoholic spritz for when you want something fancy without the headache, this customer experience software for e-commerce and DTC companies, this high quality, low cost vinho verde, this AI powered app for collaborating on notes and lists, this well-priced oversized wool blazer for fall, this floor lamp for rooms with no overhead lighting, this tupperware set for long lasting lids

Some resources: this organization that helps teens and young adults learn digital media literacy and healthy digital habits, this tool to benchmark a fair compensation offer for any level/role at a tech company, this job board of health, fitness and wellness related roles, this dashboard that tracks average performance across social platforms to help you identify trends, this resource that helps you define ā€˜fractionalā€™, this tool that analyzes your job interview answers to give you targeted feedback on how to improve based on your sector, this thread on how to make a talking head social video, this well-reviewed guide to menopause, this article on the 7 types of rest.

A good read: ā€˜Optimism as a default settingā€™, by Josh Brown

ā€˜My point is that itā€™s easy to make lists of problems. Of everything that could go wrong or get worse. I could do it with my eyes closed, and so could you.

Itā€™s much harder to have the imagination and the courage to talk openly about what might go right. What might improve. What unexpected thing could have a remarkable impact on how we work and live and change things for the better. Paradoxically, these types of improvements come along all the time. Given the long-term trend toward progress and convenience and lengthening lifespans, we ought to be more comfortable discussing the positives than we are.

But the bad stuff lands like a thud, generating headlines and invoking worst-case scenarios that drown out the sound of anything else. The good stuff creeps up on us, occurring slowly and quietly in the background as we gradually (and unobservantly) grow acclimated to it without even realizing. Itā€™s rare for us to feel it or remark upon it in real time. The media has no vested interest in reminding us of it.

But the optimists are eventually proven right. Not every day, but always and eventually. Indisputably. It just takes a while to be able to see it play out.ā€™ [read here]
